When good becomes the enemy of the better…
Anyone who wants to achieve goals often sees walls and obstacles ahead that need to be overcome. However, there are also many positive temptations in the early stages which may easily distract you from your journey. Anyone who follows a dream should know the following:
The good is the worst enemy of the better!
On the path to our goals there are always partial successes. Sometimes we even leave the path and achieve other goals that we did not initially plan to do. Before you know it, a sense of satisfaction sets in.
OK, I didn’t make it to the world championship, but I still took part in the state championship. I may not have my dream house, but I still have a nice apartment and instead of the 20 pounds I wanted to lose, I still lost 10 pounds in weight.
That’s good enough, isn’t it?
Well, yes, but didn’t we actually want to do better? Didn’t we want to achieve more? These “good” successes usually don’t have much to do with the goals we initially set. The good is the enemy of better. Instead of continuing to work on our goals, we get distracted and move towards a situation with which we are satisfied.
Attention! Distraction!
Those who go into business to pursue their dreams there will quickly realize that many doors will open for them in a relatively short space of time. You receive invitations to various events and meetings, new contacts can be made and perhaps a lucrative sounding business model will be presented to you, which you are usually told to apply now rather than later in order to take advantage of developments in the market.
Just the prospect of quick money is often an incentive for taking a supposed shortcut, but a shortcut to where? What is the shortest path good for when it does not lead to where we wanted to go?
